Kuan Yin Temple

The Kuan Yin Temple is the oldest temple in Penang. It was built in 1728 by early Chinese settlers of the Hokkien and Cantonese communities and completed in 1800.

The temple was originally named Kong Hock Keong. It was once used not only for religious but also for social functions within the Chinese community.

Kuan Yin Temple dedicated to Ma Chor Poh, the patron saint of seafarers at the beginning. Then honours Kuan Yin, the God of Mercy from 1820.

The Town Hall is the oldest Municipal Building on the island. Officiated in 1880 by the late Sir Fredderick Weld.

Town Hall was once the centre of social events, balls, drama performances and art exhibition. Its classic colonial elegance was the backdrop for a scene in the movie, Anna and the King.

Clan Jetties

Clan Jett

Clan jetty is a rows and rows of houses built on stilts out on the sea in the 19th century by Chinese immigrants. There are six Clans, where there were eight before 2005. The Peng Aun and Koay jetty were already demolished to make a way for a housing project.

Crossing Pengkalan Weld, the 1st Clan jetty is Lim Jetty, continue with Chew Jetty, Tan Jetty, Lee Jetty, Mixed Jetty and Yeoh Jetty. The most famous clan jetty is Chew Jetty, there have homestay, Souvenir shop, food stall etc.

Tan Jetty is a longest jetties, it is also a best place to shoot Komtar. Lee Jetty is most beautiful. Two rows of houses have a consistent architectural.

A plate of sago fried with bean sprouts, dried shrimps and chili paste, so the taste a little bit spicy but very delicious. A small plate of fried sago only RM2, medium size is RM2.50 and large plate is RM3.00.

Keeping George Town’s traditional crafts alive, master craftsmen and their new young apprentices, as well as visiting Thai artisans, will mount pop-up workshop in the city’s historic centre. A rare chance to learn from these skills artisans, you can stop by a workshop and make your own handicraft on the spot.

During the Muslim Fasting Month, there are many evening Ramadan Bazaar around Penang.

The Ramadan Bazaar @ Jalan Tanjung Tokong have varieties of food like Nasi Tomoto, Nasi Ayam, Roti jala, Murtabak, Mee Soup, grill fish, fried chicken,Satay, Malay traditional kuih etc.

The Bazaar normally open around 4.30pm till evening. Why not visit it and get some delicious food.

Malaysia first Teowchew puppet and opera house located in Armenian Street. It is a Teowchew opera, puppet show museum and performance space. It has a wide collection of Teowchew puppet, full dress costumes, musical instruments and an opera stage for scheduled live performance.

The Owner Ling Goh learnt her art of opera and puppetry from her mother, who has performed in puppet show for many years. And her grandmother was a famous Teowchew opera performer in old time. Most of the collections in this house are belong to this family.

Fort Cornwallis

Fort Cornwallis is a historical landmarks and one of the oldest structures in Penang. Fort Cornwallis built in 1786 when Captain Francis Light first landed on Penang Island.

Fort Cornwallis built for defence purpose. It was originally built with palm trunk stockade and then was preplaced with brickwork structure in 1804. In 1977, the fort was gazetted as an Ancient Monument and Historic site.

Inside the fort, you can see some of the original structures including a chapel, prison cells, a munitions storage area, a harbour light and several old bronze canons. You can also see open air amphitheatre, souvenir shop, historical exhibitions, art galleries etc.

A food stall at Sin Chew coffee shop which located at Katz Street serves authentic Hokkien dishes. The owner running their business for many years, most of their customers are local people who became their friends.

The owner started to prepare food from 3 am. All the food looks simple but taste good, especially their yam rice and “Bak Kee” soup.

Ong Gim Thiam and his son making spring rolls skin every morning, they have two hot plate, they stand in front of hot plate, hand with the soft, pliable dough ,with a quick twist, they spreads a paper-thin layer onto the hotplate to create the familiar flat, round pancake. Then scooped up immediately, and a piece of spring roll skin is ready.

The Penang State Mosque or Masjid Negeri Pulau Pinang is the biggest mosque in Penang. It is located at the junction of Jalan Air Itam and Jalan Masjid Negeri.

The mosque was completed in 1980 and occupies a 4.5 hectare of land. This beautiful mosque can accommodate 5,000 worshipers at one time. It is most crowded on Friday when Muslim obligatory Friday prayers.
