Penang State Museum is the best place to learn more about Penang history and the culture of different races.
This historic building donated by the East India Company and to be used as an education centre. Penang Free School was established in 1816 and moved into this building in 1821. In 1928 the Hutching School occupied this building when Penang Free School moved to the new building in Green Lane.
This building converted into Penang State Museum in year 1964 and officially opened on 14th April 1965 by the first Governor of Penang, late Tunku Abdul Rahman Putra Al-Haj. And Hutchings School moved to more modern building adjoining the museum.
Penang State Museum building is recognized as a heritage building under the Heritage Act 2005. Two Story building is now divided to few sections, ground floor is historic, culture, costume, traditional games, decoration for different races. Here have The Malays Room, The Chinese Room, The Indian Room, The Sikh Room, Nyonya Costumes, Wedding Chamber etc. Second floor is for Penang old time lifestyle, photos and some old vehicle.
Old Penang Hill train also found in this museum.

The Penang art gallery was officially opened in 1964. It was originally housed in the State Museum building, and then moved to Dewan Sri Pinang since 1994.
It is divided into two sections; level 3 is gallery for the permanent collection including paintings, sculptures photographs, ceramics, prints and several other media. Ground floor is for contemporary art gallery. Various activities like art forums, art talks, workshops, competitions and exhibition are held here.
Balik Pulau Art Society held 4th Annual Group Exhibition “Traditional & Contemporary” in this gallery until 10 August 2014.

Dewan Sri Pinang is a multi-purpose auditorium which built in early 1970’s. This auditorium accommodated over 1000 people for various events each year, like orchestras, concerts, art exhibition and festival.
During this a month –long George Town Festival, Dewan Sri Pinang becomes a main venue for exhibition and performance.
Since 1994, Penang state Gallery moved to Dewan Sri Pinang. It is divided into two section, the gallery for permanent collection on level 3 and contemporary art gallery on the ground floor.

A heritage building at No 57 Macalister Road has been turned into a branch of the Penang state Museum at the end of year 2011.
This over 100 years building was first used as the King Edward VII Memorial Hospital in 5th Feb 1912. At year 1942, it was used as communication centre and military hospital for Japanese armies.
When the war ended, this building still constructed for the maternity hospital until the hospital moved to its present premises on Jalan Residensi.
Between 1955 and 1980’s, the building was occupied by various organization including the St. John Ambulance, the Red Crescent Society, other non-profit organization and NGOs. Penang Municipal Council take over this building when the NGOs have moved to Kompleks Masyrakat Penyayang at Jalan Utama.

Chai Diam Ma in Hokkian is mean sundry shop. However this Chai Diam Ma at Queen Street is a cafe, crafts store, event space and art space.
This pre-war building around 200 years, ground floor is café and crafts corner, upstair is Art Spaces which held an exhibition every month with different topic.
Chai Diam Ma presently organizes Sean Lee 1st Solo Exhibition “Human Becoming”. Before that, there are many exhibitions held in this space, like photos and postcards exhibition. Sometime it also organise mini concert, film sharing.
This Chai Diam Ma is unique, it provided a platform for artist and crafter to show their talent, and also let people know about art, support crafter and artist.

Hin Bus Depot Art Centre was used as a bus depot. The building was decaying up, now it turned into a contemporary art centre for exhibition and performance.
The first exhibition held was the first solo show of Ernest Zacharevic, Lithuania artist who introduced murals in Penang. His solo show on January 2014 called “Art is Rubbish/Rubbish is Art”. His wall murals are still remains intact.
Since then, this art centre organize quite a lot of exhibition such as Graffiti in Progress, Think About It, Sketching George Town II, Come Close, The Movers etc.

Pulau Betong is a small fishing village located at Balik Pulau. Most of the fishermen are Malay.
Actually there is not much thing you can see or do, however you may enjoy the simple and relaxing atmosphere in this village. You may see a fishing pier full of fishing boats, the fisherman come back with a lot of fish or the residents sitting around to chit chat.
There also have a fish market where you can get very fresh seafood. The fish market usually open from noon time.
Balik Pulau Laksa is famous. There are a few places selling laksa and the taste is totally different.

Chinese hawker selling two taste of laksa, which is original Asam laksa and Lemak Siam Laksa. Asam laksa soup is made by asam and Siam laksa has added coconut milk and curry, so it is more thick and creamy. You may also try the mixed taste which combination of asam and lemak.
If you ask which laksa is the best, no one can give you the best answer because taste is depend on individual.

Saanen Dairy Goat Farm is located at Balik Pulau. It is a place where you can feeding goat, know about Saaned dairy goat, how the owner breeding the goat and milk a goat.
This goat farm is a family business run by Mr. Ho Juan Aun and his family. Its started from 2005 and open for public from year 2009. Some school or kindergarten organized an outdoor education trip to this farm.
Families and individual visitor are free of charge. However groups of more than 20 people require prior booking. An entrance fee RM5 will be charge for 30 minutes orientation about goat, milk a goat demonstration. And everyone will have a bottle of 150ml goat milk to taste.

Have you try the soya bean at Main Road, Balik Pulau?
The soya bean stall has been there around 20 years. This homemade soya bean and Douhua (soya bean pudding) taste good. The owner prepared it at home and run their business on the roadside from 11.30am to 5pm daily, except raining day.
The soya bean is served with white or black syrup, same as Douhua. If you like to taste something special, you may mix the soya bean with Douhua or soya bean with Black Grass jelly. Soya bean is RM 1 per bag and Douhua is RM1.50 per box.

Countryside Stable is a private owned property in the mist of Sungai Burung agriculture area in Balik Pulau.
From the Main Road Balik Pulau, there have a signboard to instruct you to the stables. You may enjoy the natural view of paddy field along the road before you reach the place.
This stables open daily. There are various breed of houses, you can feed the horses, enjoy the ride or taking riding lesson.
The entry fees is RM 5 for adult, RM 3 for Children. And the ride or guided ride for children is RM 17 and adult is RM20.

Pasembur is one of the Penang famous hawker food. It also called “Indian Rojak” and usually sold by Indian or Chinese hawker.
In Balik Pulau new hawker centre, there are one family selling pasembur for many years. The food stall open from 11am to 5pm daily and close on Wednesday.
Their pasembur consisting of shredded cucumber, potatoes, bean sprouts, turnip, boiled egg, prawn fritters, flour-batter fritters, bean curd. Then topped with sauce. The price is RM3 and RM4.
